How to Choose the Best Date for Your Wedding

In my series, Beginning Planning Tips, to date, we have covered your budget and the guest list. Today, I will help you determine the perfect date for your wedding.

Many factors are involved when trying to choose a date; the month, the actual day of the week and whether your guests can or cannot attend.

As you are determining the date that will work best for you, think about the following points:

Holidays. Holiday weekends, such as Christmas and Thanksgiving, could work fantastic because people usually have extra vacation days which would make it easier for families to come together. However, keep in mind, holidays could also mean higher costs at your chosen site because of being a busy time of year.

Speaking of vacation days, think about your and your fiancé’s schedule. Can you both take off a week or longer at the time you would like to have your wedding? Special projects you may be involved in may not allow you to take a full week or two off. If that’s the case, consider delaying your honeymoon for a later date. Plan ahead if you are considering going during peak months. Hotels and flights get booked up well in advance for the more popular months and locations.

Location. When choosing a date, you must consider where you would like to have your wedding and reception. If you have your heart set on the museum you have admired and dreamed about for your reception, you need to call and verify whether the date you have in mind is available. Places like that get booked well in advance – sometimes two years out. Therefore, you need to have other venues in mind as an alternative.

Day of the week. We all know Saturdays are the most popular and the most customary day of the week for weddings. However, there are only 52 Saturdays in a year. Therefore, consider a Friday evening or a Sunday as an alternative. Especially, if you want that museum. You may still be able to have your location you’ve always wanted, but just have to have it on another day of the week. Another benefit of having your wedding on a day other than Saturday, is most sites and vendors will give discounts for the “non-popular” days in order to get the business they may not have had otherwise.

In relation to choosing a location, it is best to have your wedding and reception held in the same place. However, this is not always feasible. If your wedding and reception do need to be held at two different locations, you must ensure your date is available at both places before making any deposits, which are usually non-refundable.

Weather. This is always a concern for choosing a date if your dream is to have a beach wedding or outdoors on the lawn of a beautiful estate. You must have a “Plan B” in place. Weather is the one thing that is uncontrollable and, therefore, having an alternative plan will allow you to relax and be stress-free.

Family. When you are thinking of a date, consider other milestone events happening within your family, such as other members of the family getting married, a golden anniversary or significant birthday. If you are really set on your date and it happens to be on or near the same date as one of these milestone events, ask those family members if they would mind having your wedding on or around their event. You could even acknowledge them at your wedding with a special toast or dance.

Considering the above points, you will find the perfect date. Once that’s set, now the fun begins with planning out all the details.

Don't Bust Your Budget with Your Guest List

As promised last week, I am continuing with my Beginning Planning Tips by talking about your guest list and how you can avoid busting your budget.

Using the budget tips I gave you last week, you should have a specific figure in mind for your wedding budget. Based on that figure, you should now begin creating your guest list. Have a good chat with your fiancé and begin envisioning what size of wedding you would like. Do you want it small and intimate or a large party where you invite everyone under the sun?

Okay. Come on back down to earth now and begin writing down a realistic list of those you positively want to invite and those whom you may include if you decide to do a larger fête. If you are having trouble deciding who the “positively” want to invites are, think of it this way. Are those people close enough (and I don’t mean location-wise) to you that you would invite them over for dinner? If not, those would not be the “positively” to invite people. It’s also a good idea to give each set of parents a specific number of how many they can invite; however, you do not have to promise to invite everyone on their list.

The quick nuts and bolts? The more guests you have, the more it will cost.

To guide you further, consider the following tips when creating your guest list:

1. Dividing the number. You could do this one of two ways. The number of guests could be divided in half, with one-half for your family and one-half for your fiancé’s family. However, if one of the families lives out of town, they may politely yield part of their number. Another option is to divide the list into thirds. You and your fiancé would have one-third while each set of parents get one-third each.

2. The average number of invited guests that attend a wedding is about 80 percent, but don’t guarantee your guest count on that alone.

3. Etiquettely speaking, this is how you would handle inviting singles, couples living together, engaged, etc. For singles, just invite that person. There is no need to add “and guest,” especially if you are limiting your guest list. For singles where you know they are currently in a serious relationship, it would be considerate to invite both. Never a question - one member of a married or engaged couple is never invited without the other.

4. To eliminate the question of whether you are inviting children or not, the names that are written on the inside envelope are the ones actually invited. If a guest still asks you if they can bring their children, you can tell them that your reception space can only accommodate so many and you have reached that capacity, or you could simply say your budget doesn’t allow any more people than you already invited. Be sure you stick with this. You don’t want your friends to see other families with children when you turned them down. If you are not having any children, the only children that should be at the reception would be those who are actually in the wedding party.

5. Having a destination wedding is another way to avoid the guest list dilemma. For a destination wedding, you would only invite your family and the closest of your friends for a great weekend of fun.

As you gather your guest list, you may be shocked that your list is bigger than what your budget can afford. Remember, setting priorities and determining what’s most important will help you tremendously in determining how many people you really can accommodate. Trimming the guest list or rethinking your reception décor are pretty much your only options. Be creative. You can and will find that happy place and still have the most fantastic wedding.

For those of you who may have been recently engaged over the holidays, congratulations!

Now that we are a few weeks into the new year, the early excitement has come down a bit and you are being hit with the reality that you are really getting married. You are probably asking yourself, “Now, what do I do?” “Where do I begin?” Most likely, this is your one and only wedding that you will ever have and you want it to be perfect. Therefore, I thought it would be great to give you some Beginning Planning Tips over the next several weeks. The first one and probably the hardest to maintain is: the budget.

Let’s look at what a budget is not.

A budget is not…

• … throwing a dart at a target.

• … the total amount in the parent’s bank account or your bank account.

• … what one or more girlfriends spent on their wedding.

• … necessarily what you see on TV (those are inspirations)

A budget is…

▪ A study of the range of what wedding products and services cost in your area, balanced against your individual style and personalities, inspirations and fantasies.

▪ Influenced by the number of guests you choose to invite.

A budget line item is not…

▪ “I only have $800 left for videography. Will you take that?”

▪ “Oh, my third cousin, Sam, is going to take the photos.”

A budget is:

▪ $1 Million

▪ $50,000

▪ $25,000

▪ $7,500

In other words, a budget is a specific amount of money set aside for all your wedding expenses.

Plan for about half your budget going towards your reception for food and beverage. Other significant items to consider are:

• Fees – officiant, ceremony site, wedding planner

• Wedding attire

• Photography/Videography

• Flowers

• Décor

• Gratuities

• Entertainment – ceremony and reception

• Transportation

• Gifts

• Stationery – invitations, programs, menu cards, etc.

• Accessories – aisle runner, cake knife/server, favors, etc.

A bride with $12,000 to spend, should be able to experience as much happiness on her wedding day as one with $50,000. But that presumes she has enough information, common sense, and critical thinking to make consistently good decisions, and then does so.

Sit down with your honey at your favorite coffee shop, set your priorities with what’s most important to you, get creative and use self-control when spending those budget dollars.

You can and will have a fantastic wedding.

Next week, we’ll tackle the guest list. That alone, could put a major dent in your budget.

Priscilla of Boston Store Closing Sales

No doubt, you have probably heard by now, Priscilla of Boston are closing their doors as of December 31. This is the bad news. The good news is all of their gowns have been reduced to crazy discounts and they keep reducing. Right now, gowns current ticketed prices between $499 - $1,999 are now $99. I will be taking the rest of the week off, but thought I would share with you a little blurb about the history behind us celebrating Thanksgiving Day on the last Thursday every November. Enjoy!

In the fall of 1863 the Civil War raged across this country taking the lives of the best young men that this land had to offer and threatening to tear the nation in two. In the midst of such chaos and bloodshed it would have been easy for the country's leader, President Abraham Lincoln, to raise a defiant hand toward heaven and question the wisdom of God. But, that is not what President Lincoln did, instead, he sat down and penned the following words.

"The year that is drawing to its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of such an extraordinary a nature ... (that) No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It is seemed to me fit and proper that they should solemnly, reverently, and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American people. Caring for Your Jewelry

You just got engaged. You now have that beautiful, gorgeous, sparkling diamond on your finger, but how do you keep it looking that way?

Here are some short, sweet and to the point tips on caring for that bling.

Take your ring to your trusted jeweler to have it professionally cleaned and inspected, at least once a year. They will inspect it for loose fittings, worn prongs, etc. You can also ask them how you clean it yourself at home during the course of the year.
It’s a good idea to clean your ring regularly to avoid buildup of dirt, which could dull the “sparkle.”
Periodically, check your ring for loose fittings or other possible problems that could lead to a lost diamond. If you even think something feels or looks wrong, take it off and bring it to your jeweler immediately to have it inspected. You don’t want to take any chances of losing it.
When you are not wearing your jewelry, keep it in a soft bag or compartment in your jewelry box and keep all pieces separate so they do not become scratched.
This is a no-brainer, but worth mentioning. Try to evade heavy hits or whacks to your diamond. Diamonds are one of the hardest gems; however, they could chip if hit at the right angle.

Keep that sparkle!

Décor for Your Reception

One of the most important features of your reception is the décor. This sets the mood whether your wedding style is lush New York City or mountaintop resort style. Selecting the correct elements will highlight your theme as well as take it above and beyond your wildest dreams. Unusual, elegant chairs or centerpieces that are the most über elite, will “wow” your guests and make your room “pop.” Or, setting up a lounge area with leather seats and lighted tables for the cocktail area will create a relaxed, yet elegant feeling.

Wondering where you can find such fabulous items? Start scouring flea markets, estate sales or boutique consignment shops. If you don’t have the time or necessarily want to keep all these décor items, then renting them is the next best thing. A luxurious rental company will have everything you need to create your look and set the right tone. They will take care of everything from delivery, setting it up and taking it all down afterwards.

Wedding of Priscilla + Insoo - October 15, 2011

I had the pleasure of planning and coordinating Priscilla's + Insoo's wedding this past weekend. After all the rain we had been having in our area, Saturday turned out to be a gorgeous, beautiful sunny day.

Even though the wedding was in the fall, Priscilla wanted a sort of "Valentine's" theme. Her colors were red and white.

For her favors, she had already purchased conversation hearts, so I provided red organza bags to fill with the hearts.

Priscilla + Insoo are Korean and the sweetest couple. They had a local Korean restaurant cater the food and there was plenty to go around. They were expecting around 350 guests.

Based on Priscilla's idea for her centerpieces, I used clear Deco Beads in a cylinder vase, a red submersible LED light to make it really "pop," and a red rose. It looked pretty cool. For some of the other centerpieces, I used clear rocks that Priscilla had purchased, the red LED light and a red rose. I filled the vase with water and added floating candles. We used white tablecloths with a red runner placed down the middle of each guest table.

A few weeks prior to the wedding, Priscilla had mentioned she wanted to have a game played during the reception, but she wanted it to be a surprise. She didn't want to know what game I chose. I searched the Internet for ideas and chose the one of having the guests spontaneously get up and sing a line or two from a song with the word "love" in it. Whenever the bride and groom heard the word "love" they would have to kiss. Well, on the day of the wedding, shortly before the reception began, I found out that in the Korean culture, they do not show PDA (public display of affection). I thought, "Uh, oh. What am I going to do if they won't kiss or the guests won't even get up to sing?" I did have a back-up game, but I wanted to see if this one would work. So, I felt I had to give a heads up to Priscilla so she wouldn't be totally taken offguard. I didn't tell her what the guests had to do, but I did tell her that it would involve her having to kiss her husband. At first, she was a little shy and embarrassed, but was accepting of it. When it was time for the game, I had the MC start things off by singing a song himself. They kissed. The guests seemed to really enjoy it. So, someone else got up and sang. They kissed. Quite a few guests got up and sang and really started getting into it. Everyone was laughing and clapping. One person even sang the Barney song. It was a riot. I think it really made the reception fun and got the guests really involved. I have a feeling, this is one they will remember for a long time.

I loved working with Priscilla + Insoo. They are now enjoying their honeymoon in Aruba!

It's that time of year again to don your running shoes and attend the famous Filene's Basement "Running of the Brides."

Our local one will take place this Friday, October 14 at Filene's Basement, Mazza Gallerie, 5300 Wisconsin Avenue, Washington, D.C. from 8AM - 9PM. Cash, checks and credit cards accepted. All sales are final.

Below are some helpful tips directly from Filene's Basement.

The key to being successful at the Running of the Brides® is knowing what to expect. When the doors open at 8:00am, brides and their helpers rush to the racks, grab wedding gowns and immediately start trying them on. After this initial frenzy the real sale begins, when helpers roam the floor to trade sizes, colors and designers with the other teams. Once you get in the flow of this unique event, it will all make sense. Here are a few guidelines that will help make your experience at the ROTB more successful and fun.

Before You Go

1. Recruit your team and assign jobs.
2. Create team unity by wearing something matching—for example hats, t-shirts or headbands.
This will also help you find each other in the crowd.
3. Tear out pages from bridal magazines, or print styles from on-line wedding gown sites to
show your team what you’re looking for.

The Day of the Sale

1. Dress smart—wear a sports bra or swim suit so you can change in and out of gowns
anywhere in the store.
2. Leave your handbag at home or pack light for the day.
3. Please, don’t wear make-up. White shows everything.
4. The sale starts at 8:00am, so if you want to be one of the first through the doors, plan
on arriving well before then.
5. Not everyone wants to deal with the 8:00am rush. Starting around 11:00am you’ll see
dresses going back on the racks and the scene will be calmer.

Be considerate. Once you decide you don’t like a dress, put it back on the rack. It just might be someone else’s dream dress.

Formula for Determining How Many Guests

Are you wondering how many guests will really attend your wedding reception? Here is an easy formula to help you determine just that...give or take a few.

# of guests invited x .66 x 1.15 = Total approximate # of guests who will attend

Example: 300 guests invited x .66 x 1.15 = 228 guests attending

The .66 is your average RSVP rate. The 1.15 is your unexpected guest "buffer" (e.g. "I invited them but didn't really think they'd show up" guests) but also leaves room for an extra meal or two for that "just in case" situation.

Keep in mind, however, this most likely won't be exact, but it will give you an idea of approximately how many guests to expect.

Ten Tips When Shopping for Your Wedding Gown

After you say, "Yes!" usually the first thing a bride wants to do is shop for her wedding gown. It's fun and exciting, but also could become overwhelming. To ease some of your possible anxiety, here are ten tips to help your wedding gown shopping go smoothly.

1. Definitely begin looking at bridal magazines to find the styles and designs you like. Tear out your favorites and bring them with you to the bridal salon. Show the salesperson so they can see the styles and designs you like. This will save a lot of time and frustration. Also tell them what you do not like so they won't waste valuable time bringing out gowns that you know you are going to hate before you even try them on.

2. Start shopping for your gown as soon as possible, especially if you plan to purchase a designer gown (not off the rack.) It can take up to six months (including time for alterations) to have your gown ready for your wedding day.

3. Know your price point before you step one foot into the bridal salon. Be sure to inform the salesperson to ensure they only show you gowns at or below your price point. Wise advice - do not even think about trying on a gown that is well above that price point. You know what will happen. Have you ever watched, "Say Yes to the Dress?" You know what I'm talking about. You run the risk of going way over your price point. Don't forget to include the cost of accessories (veil, undergarments, shoes, etc.) and alterations.

4. Decide on which bridal salons you would like to visit and call them up to make an appointment. Most require one. Do not assume that you can just show up and expect to be waited on immediately. If they do not take appointments, the best time to arrive is as soon as they open their doors.

5. Bring your mother and your matron/maid of honor, who is usually your most trustworthy friend. Do not show up with an entourage of people. You will have too many views that may cause you to become frustrated, disappointed and/or baffled. On the other side, don't go alone either. You do want someone else's opinion besides the salesperson's.

6. Trust your heart. You are the only one who truly knows your body and what looks good on you. Listen to yourself. Don't just rely your decision on someone else's thoughts. You will know when it's the right dress.

7. When going to try on gowns, wear neutral-colored undergarments. Do not wear lots of make-up or red or dark lipsticks, and heavy perfume. These elements could damage a gown.

8. We all want to lose weight before our wedding day, but you should still buy your wedding dress that fits you now. It is much easier and less expensive to "take in" a gown versus trying to "enlarge" it which may not always be possible.

9. While you want your gown to be "drop dead gorgeous," be sure it is comfortable as well. When having it altered, be sure to move around (as if you were dancing) and sit in it.

10. As with any major purchase, it is not wise to make an impulse buy, but to "sleep" on it. You want to be absolutely sure this is the dress you have been dreaming about. Most salons only accept a non-refundable deposit and/or may not accept exchanges. So "shop 'til you drop" to find that perfect wedding gown for you.

A Few Tips for Your Reception Design

Tired of going to weddings and seeing the same old style of seating - all round tables set in the same pattern?

No need to use the "standard" style anymore. I like to mix things up a bit. Use rounds, squares, rectangles or even ovals. You can also mix small tables with large tables. If you are using a head table for the wedding party, this table should always make a statement by either where it's placed and/or having more elaborate decor.

For larger receptions where some guests will be seated far away from the head table, you could give those tables a more elaborate centerpiece or something that will make them feel special. No one likes to feel they are "lost in the shuffle" so to speak. For those guests whom you know love to dance, seat them closer to the dance floor to get the party started and remember to consider your elderly guests and seat them away from the speakers.

Contingency (Back-up) Plans

For those of us on the east coast, we are preparing for the impending appearance of Hurricane Irene. Fortunately, I do not have a wedding this weekend. But, I was just thinking about east coast couples who have planned outdoor weddings this weekend. Do they have a contingency plan in case Hurricane Irene hits? That made me think about contingency (back-up) plans. So, I thought I would share four of my basic back-up planning tips.

1. When scoping out sites for your outdoor wedding, always ask the venue if they have an indoor space that could be used in case the wedding and/or reception has to be moved inside. This will save you much time and headaches if you have a "Plan B" in place.

2. If you are really set on a particular outdoor venue and they do not have indoor space available, consider renting a tent. Call various tent rental companies and see if one will be available on your date. However, they will not be able to hold one for you and expect to be called at the last minute. This will cost you a little more money, but isn't it worth it to still be able to have your outdoor wedding without you and your guests getting wet?

3. Consider the time of day you plan to have your wedding. If your wedding is in the middle of summer, you may want to consider having a sunset wedding or an early morning wedding instead of in the middle of the hottest part of the day. You won't be comfortable and your guests certainly won't be comfortable. It would just make for a very miserable day. Not a pleasant memory for your wedding day. You also could consider large fans placed around the peripheral of the inside of the tent. If your outdoor wedding is planned for the cooler months, consider renting outdoor heaters.

4. Pests. Yes, you must think about those pesky mosquitoes and other annoying bugs that might take a bite out of your guests. If your wedding is in the evening, you can purchase those citronella torchieres which can double as part of your decor for inside the tent. You also might consider having the area sprayed by a professional, such as the Mosquito Squad.

Planning ahead will enable you to rest and relax knowing your wedding will still go on, whether it's covered with a tent or has to be moved inside. Remember, the only real goal for the day is that you get married to the one you love.

Purple Inspiration Board - Jezz & Eric's Wedding

Over the weekend, I had the pleasure of designing flowers and provide a minimum of decorating for Jezz’s and Eric’s wedding on Saturday, July 9, 2011.

The bride was all about purple. For the bride's bouquet, I used purple hydrandea, lavender mini-calla lilies and lisianthus tied off with a dark purple ribbon enhanced with jewels. The bridesmaids’ bouquets were white hydrangeas with a touch of lavender sweet peas and white stock. The groom had a lavender mini-calla lily with a couple of loops of bear grass while the groomsmen had a purple lisianthus as their boutonniere.

For the ceremony, I created the altar flowers with a variety of purple and white flowers. I filled the bottom of the vase with purple glass gems and used purple gossamer as the filler. I draped lavender tulle on the front of the arbor and added a purple hydrangea to the white tulle pew bows with lavender ribbon.
For the chairs, I rented stretch Spandex white chair covers with satin lilac sashes. This really gave the plain room a little “wow” factor.

I also designed and printed the programs, menu cards, seating assignment board and paper rose petal cones.

For the reception centerpieces, the groom cut and spray-painted his own branches and I added crystals and butterflies, also provided by the bride and groom. I created the “lighted” look using submersible purple LED lights set in Deco Beads. It really made the centerpiece “pop.” I added hydrangeas to the top of the branches as well as bear grass cascading out of the top of the vase.
The bride rented silver chivari chairs with lavender cushions. This really added a pretty look to the ballroom.

Do you look like the couple in this picture as you are planning your wedding with your groom?

No doubt you have heard the term “bridezilla” and perhaps have even watched the reality show by the same name, but the up and coming “groomzilla” is now starting to rise to stardom.

I just listened to a news segment this morning about how grooms are now becoming more and more involved in the wedding planning. My husband was actually very involved with our wedding planning. He was not a "groomzilla" however. We were in our mid-30’s, no longer living at home with the parents, had our own careers, so we were paying for everything. We are both very administrative and we worked very well together in planning our wedding. But, not all grooms may be so easy-going about it. Some even go so far as having the final say on the bridesmaids dresses down to the choice of shoes or even want to help their bride choose her wedding gown.

As a wedding planner, I love it when the groom is involved in the wedding planning. Afterall, it is his wedding, too. I was such a believer in this that in my wedding, I asked (and he complied) my husband to walk down the aisle. I wanted him to have his shining moment just as much as me.

So, ladies. What about your grooms? Are they “groomzillas” or are they letting you do most of the planning?

Gerbera Daisy Theme

I recently designed flowers for a wedding on June 11. The bride was all about Gerbera daisies. She was specific in that she only wanted white Gerberas with black centers.

I love Gerberas myself. They are so pretty and a very hardy flower that lasts a long time.

I made a Flower Girl head wreath out of daisies, baby's breath and ivy. This was the first time I had the opportunity to make a head wreath. It was a little challenging putting each flower cluster on, but in the end, I think it turned out pretty nice.

I made bouquets, mini-bouquets for the mothers to carry, boutonnieres, corsages, Flower Girl mini-bouquet (as well as the head wreath) and a tossing bouquet.

New Postage Prices for Wedding Invitations

The United States Postal Service (USPS) has recently changed the price of stamps that affect many wedding invitations and save-the-date cards. If you have yet to mail your invitations you should be aware of these new rates. Here's a list of sizes and prices that have just changed as of yesterday, April 17, 2011:

1st class, 2 oz - $0.64 (previously $0.61)

1st class, 2 oz - odd size* - $0.84 (previously $0.81)

1st class, 3 oz - $0.84 (previously $0.78)

1st class, 3.5 oz - $1.04 (previously $0.95)

1st class, 4 oz - $1.48 (previously $1.39)

Postcards, 1 oz - $.29 (previously $0.28)

First class 1 oz stamps will remain at $0.44. (See all 2011 postage rates)

*odd-size or non-machineable letters include envelopes with clasps or square envelopes.

Two New Wedding-Themed Stamps

On April 22, the post office will also release a new wedding-themed Forever® stamp featuring two white roses. While this is only a $0.44 stamp for one-ounce mail it does provide an additional wedding-themed stamp at face value (the rings stamp has been available since 2009) to the list of available choices. The old $0.61 wedding cake stamp is now a $0.64 stamp.

Invitation Etiquette – Part 3

ADDRESSING THE INVITATIONS

• Addresses should be handwritten in black ink for the most formal and traditional way. But, today, it is also acceptable to address the envelopes in the color of ink used on the invitation. The addresses should never be typed. However, machine calligraphy is becoming more acceptable today. Labels, on the other hand, should never be used.
• Abbreviations or initials should not be used when writing the names. The person’s middle name may be used if you like. If it is used, it should be written out in full.
• Titles are written out, as are Avenue, Street, the city and state.
• On the outside envelope, writing “The Johnson Family” is not proper. The couple’s name should be written out. For example: Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Robert Johnson
• Invite both members of a couple, even if you only know one of them. When inviting people who are married but the wife kept her maiden name, use both last names. For example:
Ms. Jennifer Ann Weber
Mr. Michael John Anderson
• The inner envelope should be addressed with the last name of a couple, such as “Mr. and Mrs. Johnson.” If children are invited who are under the age of 18, their first names should be written underneath the parent’s name, oldest to youngest. For example:
Mr. and Mrs. Johnson
John, Jane and Tom
• Very close relatives may be addressed by their first names on the inner envelope, such as “Uncle John and Aunt Sue.”
• If you are enclosing a reply card, remember to purchase stamps and place on each reply envelope. The reply envelope should be printed with the name and address of the person responsible for the wedding/reception.

Invitation Etiquette – Part 2

INSERTION TIPS FOR INVITATION AND OTHER ENCLOSURES

In the past, tissues were used to guard against ink smears. Today's printing methods don't require tissue but many brides continue to use it for the sake of tradition. If you wish to include tissue, place it over the printing of the invitation.

The invitation should be inserted in the inner envelope with the folded edge first and the front of the invitation facing the flap. Enclosures are inserted facing the flap, in front of the invitation-the reception invitation first, then the reply card under the flap of the reply envelope behind it and any other enclosures.

The inner envelope should not have any adhesion on the flap.

Make up one completed invitation packet with all enclosures and take to the post office to weigh. Purchase the appropriate postage.

After the enclosures and invitation have been placed in the inner envelope, this envelope is placed in the outer envelope. The names should be facing the flap. Seal the outer envelope with a glue stick for a nice, clean seal and mail. Be sure to check each envelope before sealing to make sure it contains the invitation and all enclosures.

Take your invitations to the post office and ask them to “hand cancel” them so they don’t run through the postal machines and possibly crunch or smear your envelopes.

Following these tips, your guests will receive a beautiful, perfect invitation.

Invitation Etiquette – Part 1

When deciding about the style and kind of invitation you would like for your wedding, keep in mind the time of the wedding and reception will determine the formality of the wedding. Therefore, this will determine how your invitation will look and is worded. The invitation will set the tone for the wedding and reception and let your guests know whether it will be formal or casual.

There are several different ways to word an invitation. You can visit www.verseit.com to review various wording for invitations.

In this post, I am just going to focus on the proper spelling and wording of invitations. The next couple of posts will focus on how envelopes should be stuffed and how to address the invitations.

CORRECT SPELLING AND WORDING OF INVITATIONS

• “Honour” and “favour” are always spelled with the “u” for a formal, religious setting
• Remember, dessert is always spelled with a double “s” - you don’t want your invitations to read that you are having a “desert reception” - people might think you are having your reception in the Sahara (Yes, I have actually seen it misspelled on an invitation.)
• Hors d’Oeuvres is spelled exactly as it appears here
• The time and year are always spelled out as well as the date with the day written before the month, such as Saturday, the twenty-ninth of October
• The most formal wording to write out the year would be: two thousand and eleven, two thousand and twelve and so on. Other acceptable options are: twenty hundred and eleven (sounds funny, but it mirrors the nineteen hundred format); the year two thousand and eleven; or in the year two thousand and eleven. It is not wrong to use a numeral for the year—it’s just not as formal. However, the formality of the rest of your invitation, as well as the wedding itself, should be consistent with the wording on your invitations
• When the bride’s parents are divorced and only the mother is paying for the wedding and reception, then only her name appears on the invitation. If both parents are paying, then both names can appear on the invitation with the mother’s name listed first
• Both the bride’s and groom’s parents can issue the invitation, meaning both sets of names can appear on the invitation, however, the bride’s parents’ names always appear first

I will be taking the rest of the week off, but thought I would share with you a little blurb about the history behind us celebrating Thanksgiving Day on the last Thursday every November. Enjoy!

In the fall of 1863 the Civil War raged across this country taking the lives of the best young men that this land had to offer and threatening to tear the nation in two. In the midst of such chaos and bloodshed it would have been easy for the country's leader, President Abraham Lincoln, to raise a defiant hand toward heaven and question the wisdom of God. But, that is not what President Lincoln did, instead, he sat down and penned the following words.

"The year that is drawing to its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of such an extraordinary a nature ... (that) No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. Floral Design

I did flowers for a wedding today. They were such a sweet couple. I was referred to them by the bride’s hair stylist/makeup artist. Thank you, Erin. Had to deliver them this morning in DC at 9AM!

I spent all day and evening until 11PM yesterday assembling the flowers. Probably would have been done much earlier had it not been for phone calls and other of life’s little interruptions.

I made 7 bouquets, 3 mini-bouquets, 7 wrist corsages, a cake topper and 20 boutonnieres! Never had that many for one wedding before. Whew! It was a great experience, though. I sat down for most of the assembly, which I usually don’t do, but it actually worked really well and my feet didn’t ache by day's end.

The color scheme was dark purple and deep sage. The bride’s bouquet consisted of all white flowers of peonies, dahlias, lisianthus and waxflowers as a filler. I love how it came out. This might be my favorite one I designed yet. The bridesmaids bouquets had purple alstroemeria, white lisianthus and purple waxflowers. The boutonnieres consisted of purple waxflowers backed by a gardenia leaf with the exception of the Groom’s who had white waxflowers. Simple, yet elegant.

I took these photos and they don’t do them justice, but I hope you enjoy them anyway.

Planning: Ten Biggest Pre-Wedding Mistakes

Even the smartest, most organized couple can make mistakes during wedding planning. Below are ten things you should keep an eye on before walking down that aisle.

1. Budget, what budget?
If you have started planning your wedding, you know it can cost a lot of money. Many excited brides start booking wedding professionals and making purchases without having a real budget, and then they're shocked to discover they've spent all of their money (or their parents' money) and still don't have half the things they need. If you bounce checks, don't have the money to pay your deposits, or make your final payments past your wedding professionals’ deadlines, your wedding will not happen as you have planned. The flowers won't be delivered, your cake will not be decorated, and the band will not play all night -- unless you don't pay up. Planning a wedding is serious business. Make a budget and keep track of your expenses.

2. Wedding gown/bridesmaid dresses ordered too late.
If you are not going to buy your gown “off the rack,” then you need to place your gown order six to eight months prior to your wedding. Most gowns are made to order. If you wait too long before your wedding date to make your selection, you may risk the gown not arriving on time. Bridesmaid dresses should also be decided upon during the same time period, but only after your gown has been selected. You want to make sure your ladies have enough time to get measured and find accessories.

3. Not hiring wedding professionals.
Seriously. Would you have a friend fix a plumbing problem? Of course not. You would want a professional plumber to come in and do the job right. Same goes for your wedding. You want professionals who do this for a living – photographers, videographers, florists, wedding coordinators, etc. They have the experience and skills to help you have the wedding of your dreams. Don’t risk your friendships by depending upon them to do a professional’s job. There are wedding professionals that fit every style and budget. Rely on them to keep you stress-free.

4. Marriage license application woes.
Since every state has their own set of policies for marriage licenses, brides are bound to make mistakes. Be sure to investigate time restrictions well in advance of your wedding date. Get your license 31 days before in some states -- and you won't be able to legally marry on your wedding day because it may be valid for only 30 days. Go for your license the day before your wedding and you may not get it in time, because some states have a 48-hour waiting period. Another common mess-up if you're remarrying: not having official divorce papers in time to get the certificate. Be sure to check your state’s marriage laws.

5. Out-of-town guests have a room?
Brides often leave blocking out hotel rooms for out-of-town guests until the last minute. If you're marrying in a city (particularly one where conventions take place) or in a resort town and you don't investigate hotel availability in advance, you can literally end up with not a single room for any of your guests to stay in. Your wedding might go on -- but no one will be able attend. Reserve a room block as early as possible, up to a year in advance, in some cases.

6. Inviting too many guests.
Make sure your guest list and your reception site match numbers-wise. You can't invite 400 people assuming only 250 will RSVP with a yes (because your “must-have” reception site can only hold 250). What if 300 happen to say yes, you may have to turn 50 away at the door. Some sites may not be able to add several more tables, as fire laws limit the maximum number of people in any room at one time. To avoid this, assume 80% will respond "yes" and limit your guest list accordingly.

7. Beauty treatments scheduled too late.
Many brides think that scheduling chemical peels the week before their weddings will leave their skin looking angelic on their big days. Others think having their teeth bleached within days of their weddings will leave those pearly whites sparkling. Thinking of tanning the day before your wedding? Remember that scene in “The Wedding Planner?” You may end up with blisters instead of sun-kissed skin. Last-minute beauty treatments can lead to breakouts, mistakes, or -- even worse -- serious infections. Start a long-term beauty regimen months before the big day and save the heavy-duty beauty treatments (i.e. chemical peels, micro-dermabrasion, extracting facials, deep-tanning sessions, teeth whitening, and so on) for at least two weeks before the big day, or you could risk ruining all the hard work you've done to make your wedding -- and photos - perfect. (Never mind putting your health and happiness at risk for the most important day of your life.)

8. Invitations – didn’t put enough postage on the envelopes?
You'd be surprised how many brides just stick a 44-cent stamp on their invites and drop them in the mailbox. All but a few wedding invitations require additional postage. The postal service will not take pity on you -- your invites will be returned (and rubber-stamped with that ugly "insufficient postage" message) -- and it will take at least two weeks (never mind the additional $$) to get them back out the door. Always take a complete invitation to the post office to be weighed before purchasing all your stamps.

9. Ignoring religious restrictions.
Think your rabbi didn't mean it when he said you needed to cover your arms in the temple? Guess again. If you plan on marrying in a church, synagogue, etc., you need to abide by their rules. Wearing inappropriate attire or not completing pre-wedding requirements could be grounds for your Officiant to stop your wedding before it begins. As soon as you get engaged, be sure to contact your house of worship to find out about any potential issues. Some houses of worship won't let you marry on certain holy days; make sure to check your wedding date with your Officiant before putting down any deposits for your reception site or wedding professionals.

10. Rain or shine? Don’t ignore weather warnings.
Brides marrying outdoors often test fate and just wish for the best when it comes to bad weather. Always have a backup plan, or else you may not have a place to marry at all -- or your guests (and you) may be in misery at the hands of Mother Nature. Temperatures normally around the balmy 70-degree mark may unexpectedly turn into a boiling 100-degree debacle – have fans available for guests and it wouldn’t hurt to have bottles of water, too. A hurricane, flashflood, or gale force winds may visit on your wedding day; make sure you have an interior alternative or a tent as a back-up location.

Simple Ways to Reduce That Pre-Wedding Stress

As your wedding day approaches, you may begin feeling anxious and nervous. It’s totally natural to feel this way.

I have listed below eight ways to help reduce that anxiety and nervousness. They are all very easy and FREE!

1. Start walking! That's right. Take a brisk walk around the block, up the street, wherever. The more energy you use, the more stress you rid yourself of (and it helps to tone your legs and build your cardiovascular system so that you can dance all night long at your reception!)

2. Take a few moments each day, preferably at night before going to sleep, and do breathing exercises. Yes, the same ones moms do when they are in delivery. Why? Because breathing deeply, in a rhythmic fashion, exhaling slowly helps to relax your mind, body and nervous system and it slows down the adrenaline flow. Take these minutes to think only of relaxing and how good you will feel tomorrow. Think about your groom and how happy you are going to be for the rest of your lives.

3. Start drinking more water instead of caffeine and sugar loaded liquids. Reduce salt intake. Caffeine, sugar and salt cause chemical reactions to your nervous system by making you jumpy, nervous and high-strung. Salt or sodium, also helps your body retain water, causing that bloating, puffed up feeling.

4. Laughing, singing and dancing are great ways to reduce the stress.

5. Another stress reducer is to stretch your muscles out. Do leg and arm stretches to help tone and remove built up tensions in your muscles. Head and neck rolls can do wonders while sitting all day in the office!

6. Dim the lights in the bathroom and take a nice, hot bath. Use candles and play classical or easy listening music.

7. A glass of wine can help you to relax, but don't over do it.

8. If you prefer, that old home remedy of warm milk will do it every time!

Tips for Stocking the Bar at Your Reception

If you are having your reception at a location where you have to hire an off-premise caterer, you may consider stocking your own bar in order to save money. If you do stock the bar yourself, don’t forget you will need to hire bartenders or ask your caterer to provide same.

What kind of bar should you have? Basically, there are three types: Open Bar, Limited Bar and Cash Bar. I am only going to address the Open Bar and Limited Bar. Because, you really wouldn’t think of having a cash bar, would you? Do you really want your guests to pay for their own drinks? I don’t think so.

Open Bar

In this type of bar, you pretty much are going to stock it with just about everything your guests love to drink. Obviously, this would be the more expensive option. To help pare down the cost, you could opt to close the bar about an hour before the reception ends.

Limited Bar

This type of bar would only serve beer, wine and maybe a signature cocktail. Thus, this would be a less expensive option.

When you begin planning for your bar, set a budget. Contact a good liquor wholesaler who will work with you to stay within your budget. There are such a wide variety of wines in different price ranges, that you will be able to find a good one to fit your budget. Additionally, you can choose between "top shelf" liquors and "house pour" liquors.

If the wholesaler is a good one, they should also be able to help you choose the right wines, champagne, etc. to go with your cocktail hour and menu.

For the toasts, you can save money on the champagne by having the caterer bring out the glasses already poured at the time of the toast. This way, the guests will not see the brand and you, therefore, could choose a less expensive champagne. Most people only sip it anyway for the toast and don’t touch it again. This will enable you to spend a little more on the wines you'll be serving with dinner, if that is more important to you.

Finally, and most importantly, make sure the liquor wholesaler will credit you for any unopened bottles.

How to Write Thank You Notes

Does the daunting, time-consuming task of writing thank you notes get you down? Not sure how or what to say to each gift giver? Well, I have written up some easy to follow ways of how to write your thank you notes.

You basically need to write three things:

1. Mention the gift (or course!)
2. It’s nice to say how you are going to use the gift
3. Always mention how well you liked it
4. (Okay, I know I said three, but it doesn’t hurt to add more) You could also mention how you enjoyed seeing them at the wedding and how you appreciated them coming all the way from across the United States to attend.

Your thank you notes should always be written by hand. Even in today’s technological world, receiving a hand-written note is always appreciated and more personal.

If you receive gifts prior to the wedding, it is best to write those thank you notes as soon as you receive the gift. If you wait until a few weeks after the wedding, they may wonder if you received the gift or not.

Since people will expect you to be on your honeymoon for a week or two, they will not expect an immediate thank you note from you. However, as soon as you return, you should begin writing the notes in order to get them out within six weeks after your wedding. Write several every night until you are finished. It really does not take that long and you will be glad to get them out of the way as soon as possible. Pick certain evenings that you and your husband can sit down together to write the thank you notes. Make it a fun date night. He can write some, too, to people he knows best. However, whether you or your husband actually write the note, both of you should sign it.

Don’t forget to send thank you notes to all those people who helped you get through your day, such as, the florist, caterer, photographer, hair stylist, wedding coordinator, parents, etc. Without these people, your day would never have happened.

Seating Assignments or is it Table Assignments or Both?

Does the idea of arranging the seating of your guests at your reception make you cringe? It doesn’t have to be that way.

First things, first. If you are confused about the difference between seating assignments and table assignments, here’s the difference. If you want to actually assign where every guest is going to sit at each table, this is called “seating assignments.” You would have a place card at each place setting on the guest tables to let each guest know where to sit at the table. You would also need escort cards or some other way of letting guests know which table they are to be seated. If you are just going to assign guests to a particular table but not indicate which seat to take at their table, then this is called “table assignments.” For this choice, you would just need escort cards or some other way to let guests know which table they are to be seated. Side note: IMHO, it is more of a headache to do seating assignments as you have to figure out if John can sit next to Jane without generating gossip or if Uncle Bob can stand sitting next to your best friend’s cousin’s mother.

At any rate, if you are planning an elegant sit-down meal for the reception, you should have table assignments for ease and to generate good conversation among your guests who have similar interests.

Assigning seats and/or tables, however, can be an organizing nightmare and cause a lot of stress. The reason being, the table assignments usually cannot be made until one or two weeks (sometimes days) before the wedding. Why? Because your RSVP date on your wedding invitation is usually two weeks before the wedding day. Also, guests who respond late or say they’re coming, then call a few days before the wedding to say they can’t come after all (after you have spent hours arranging the table assignments.) This could mean rearranging some of the tables at the last minute. Aghhh!

How do you avoid this? Simple. Don’t have assigned seats or tables. Have buffet style or food stations instead and let guests sit where they choose. However, if you really have your heart set on a formal sit-down meal using seating and/or table assignments (my personal preference), then you’ll need to allow enough time the last week before the wedding to make the seating and/or table assignments, including possibly having to make last minute changes. The key here is to be flexible.

To make this as easy as possible, I have developed seating tips for you to follow to make your seating assignments go as smoothly as possible. The most preferred seating is to have eight to ten guests at each table. This, however, depends upon your table size and space available.

Etiquettely Speaking

If you decide to have a head table, the wedding party would sit as follows: the bride sits to the right of the groom; the Best Man sits to the right of the bride; the Maid or Matron of Honor sits to the left of the groom. As much as possible, the other positions alternate between men and women. You may also wish for each attendant’s spouse to sit with him or her. Today, however, most couples have done away with a head table and just have a Sweetheart Table. This way, their wedding party can sit with their spouses or significant others.

At the bride’s parents’ (or host) table, the guests should include both sets of parents (if not divorced), grandparents, the officiant and his/her spouse. For the most formal of weddings, if you decide to do place cards to actually pre-assign each seat at the tables, then the parents’ table should be arranged in the following manner:

Groom’s father is on bride’s mother’s right
Groom’s mother is on bride’s father’s right
Officiant sits on bride’s mother’s left

The bride’s mother determines other places at the table. Never seat stepparents at the same table. For example, the bride’s parents are divorced and remarried. Since the bride’s mother is considered the hostess, her table will be the “official” parents table. Therefore, the bride’s father and his wife would sit at another table. The officiant and spouse should sit at the “official” parents’ table.

The other tables and seating assignments can be arranged however you would like using the following suggestions for grouping guests together:

The Beginning

• Divide your list into groups. Separate family, close friends, co-workers, etc. Design a floor plan of the reception site including total number of tables and how many guests will sit at each table.
• If you are going to have a dance floor, the best place is directly in front of the band in the center of the room or in the center of the room flush against the stage area. Tables can then be placed on both sides and/or in front of the dance floor – never behind the band.

Establish Good Conversation

• When assigning tables, if there is a group you have put together that is larger than one table can seat but too small for two tables, consider dividing the group in half and seat at tables that are next to each other. You can fill in the extra spaces with people that don’t really fit into any particular group.
• If you have a lot of unmatched guests, place guests together whom you think would be compatible. Think of ages, interests and/or marital status when you are assigning tables to this particular group. For example, a widowed friend would probably not appreciate sitting next to four newlyweds.
• If after assigning all the tables and there are empty seats, divide the empty spaces among several different tables. It looks better to have two tables of eight rather than a table of ten and a table of six.

Be Aware

• Try not to place feuding families or friends at the same table or near each other (unless you need some extra free entertainment.)
• Be sensitive and seat elderly and/or disabled guests away from the music or speakers, especially if it will be hard for them to get up and move around during the reception.

Have You Considered Your Guests?

If you indicate to your guests that you are on an extremely tight budget, but you and your groom leave in a horse and carriage or a Hummer limo, guests are going to be a little “tee’d off” that you had a cash bar - making them pay for their drinks.

You have invited your family and dearest and closest friends. Wouldn’t you want them to remember your wedding with good thoughts rather than complaining thoughts? Think of it this way. You are hosting a party in your home. Would you have guests pay for their drinks? Most likely not, especially if you want to keep these friends. Well, your reception is like one huge party of invited guests. They should never, ever have to pay to attend your reception. If you need to save money, cut your guest list, have smaller centerpieces, etc. If you’re thinking, “I can’t cut anyone from the guest list.” Then ask yourself, “Would I invite this person/couple over for dinner?” If not, they are probably just an acquaintance, so no need to invite them. Why spend money for someone you probably will not be in another social situation with again?

Guests may not remember too much of your ceremony, but they usually do remember the reception, especially the food and whether they had to pay for their drinks or not. I remember helping one of my brides with her wedding and the one priority for her guests was that her reception had excellent food. She knew that’s what guests were going to remember, and it is so true. When planning my daughter’s wedding eight years ago, we found a perfect venue that apparently had excellent food because we still get comments from family and friends that said it was the best “wedding” food they have ever tasted. Just something for you to think about.

Another thing guests don’t like are favors that they can’t use and they just throw away. The best favors are either edible, i.e. chocolates or something you know they can use, such as candles.

Most guests also get bored with slideshows. They already know you, so why have them endure seeing all your baby photos, childhood experiences, and you and groom posed at various locations? Save this to show at the rehearsal dinner or have a portable DVD player by the guest book that guests can view at their leisure without having to be “forced” to sit quietly and watch a video in the middle of your reception. Plus, nine times out of ten, something goes wrong with the video or PowerPoint presentation. That takes away from the flow of the reception if the tech guys have to play around with the equipment to get it running again.

To sum up, as host and hostess of your wedding, it is your responsibility to ensure your guests have a great time. Make it unique, experience good times and have fun. In other words, nothing else should take precedence over the comfort of your guests. You may want to have the most gorgeous silk linens and Chivari chairs, but if you didn’t spend the extra money to provide drinks for your guests, they won’t even notice the linens and chairs. Therefore, please don’t compromise the comfort of your guests.

Perfect DIY Escort or Place Cards for a February Wedding

If you or your bridesmaids are crafty and love to do DIY projects, then you may like this idea. I saw this project a while back on Martha Stewart’s wedding blog. I thought it would be perfect for a February wedding, especially if yours is on or near Valentine’s Day.

This is what you'll need:

Start with a standard tented card, either store bought or hand cut. These are 3" x 5", folded. Using a craft knife, cut a small diagonal line over the card's fold. This is where your heart will sit. Vary the placement of your cut on each card.

Choose your desired colors in cardstock, and cut out the hearts. You can use a craft punch for this or cut them out by hand.

Then, slide your hearts onto the cuts on the top of the cards.
